I’m Haley Maka (he/him), a rising senior at Rhode Island School of Design earning my BFA in Illustration. I’m a New England children’s book illustrator with a love for the magic of nature. I often incorporate elements of my childhood in my work, such as New Hampshire’s woods and Maine’s beaches. I’m primarily focused on creating illustrated stories that inspire young readers with positive messaging and educational content. My work often tells stories that highlight underrepresented experiences, such as childhood grief and non-traditional family structures, in an approachable way. The stories I create always encourage kindness and model positive social relationships.
My artistic practice includes traditional and digital techniques, often collaging mediums together. I love experimenting with texture, color, and layering. When I’m not illustrating children’s content, I’m working on my personal oil paintings. In my painting practice, I focus on color and light relationships while representing topics of personal identity. I also do freelance photography for events and portraits.
With my work, I strive to emulate the very books that sparked my creative curiosity as a kid. When I’m not in the studio, you can find me crocheting, spending time outdoors, or watching movies.
