Nova loves the moon but misses her dearly during the day. Without the glow of the moon, can Nova find a way to enjoy the sun's light too?
This fall, I had the honor of taking RISD's Picture and Word course, taught by Judy Sue Goodwin Struges and April Jones Prince. Throughout this class, I dove headfirst into picture books, learning about the creation of a story and the publishing process. After writing manuscripts and illustrating sample spreads weekly, I settled on this story to take to a full dummy.
This story reflects my own childhood experience of losing my mother and learning to spend more time with my dad, but it can also relate to children with divorced parents, deployment, etc. Below are photographs documenting the handbound hardcover dummy and also the completed sample illustrations. These were created traditionally using gouache and colored pencil.
